Rotterdam's Zandstraat neighborhood and its Jewish inhabitants
Rotterdam's Zandstraat neighborhood and its Jewish inhabitants
Where Rotterdam City Hall now stands, one of the most notorious neighborhoods in the country used to be located. The Zandstraat and surrounding area were demolished more than a hundred years ago to make way for new construction, but still plays a role in the city in many ways. After all, it was the place where the foundation was laid for all kinds of modern forms of entertainment: from cinema and brown pub, to theater and tingel-tangel. The district is known as Rotterdam's first red light district, but the fact that these streets had a much richer range of residents has remained underexposed. For the first time, the Jewish life of the Zandstraat neighborhood is examined in all its diversity: from the shul to Louis Davids.
